O Corinthians estreia na Copa Libertadores da América nesta quinta-feira, contra o Platense, na Argentina, com outro debute no banco de reservas. Isso porque a partida marca o primeiro encontro do técnico Fernando Diniz com os seus jogadores em uma partida oficial.

Depois de encerrar a preparação para o importante desafio, Fernando Diniz pode surpreender e escalar o jovem atacante Kayky Ferrari. O jogador treinou grande parte da atividade desta quarta-feira, véspera do jogo, entre os titulares. Ou seja, o novo treinador pode ter a joia como novidade contra os argentinos.

Kayky Ferrari tem apenas 21 anos e fez apenas uma partida como titular em 2026. O menino entrou em campo no clássico contra o São Paulo, em janeiro, pelo Campeonato Paulista. Antes, já havia feito oito jogos com a camisa do Corinthians e marcou apenas um gol.

Yuri Alberto foi a campo, mas apenas para ouvir algumas orientações de Fernando Diniz. Isso porque o artilheiro corintiano foi desfalque na atividade da última terça-feira. Yuri arrancou o dente siso e ficou com um inchaço na boca. No entanto, o jogador vai à Argentina. Sem Yuri, Pedro Raul ficou entre os 11.

Na atividade realizada nesta quarta-feira, Fernando Diniz fez alguns testes com variações táticas. Nem mesmo o pouco tempo à frente do time foi capaz de impedir o treinador de tentar algo novo na equipe nos dois treinamentos da semana.

Ele observou André Carrillo na vaga de Kayke, formação que deixa o meio de campo mais preenchido. O peruano também foi escalado no lugar de André. Outro teste que Diniz observou foi a entrada de André Ramalho no lugar de Gabriel Paulista.

Memphis Depay segue em tratamento de lesão muscular e está fora da partida. A tendência é de que o holandês volte a jogar apenas em 40 dias. Ou seja, ele deve perder o segundo jogo da equipe na competição continental. Kaio César e Gui Negão também são desfalques.

O volante Charles se recupera de uma pancada na região do tornozelo e não participou de nenhum treinamento sob o comando do novo técnico. O meio-campista, portanto, é outro desfalque nesta estreia corintiana.

O Flamengo venceu o Cusco, do Peru, por 2 a 0, na noite desta quarta-feira, fora de casa, no estádio Garcilaso de la Vega, em jogo válido pela primeira rodada do Grupo A da Copa Libertadores da América. O time treinado por Leonardo Jardim superou a altitude de 3.350 metros e conquistou os três pontos.

Bruno Henrique, portanto, fez o primeiro gol do Flamengo na campanha desta temporada, campanha essa que pode dar o pentacampeonato da competição. O atacante aproveitou um cruzamento de Ayrton Lucas e finalizou de cabeça no canto do arqueiro da equipe peruana.

Já o segundo gol saiu nos acréscimos. Depois de um contra-ataque rápido entre os três que entraram no segundo tempo: Luiz Araújo, Pedro e Arrascaeta. A primeira finalização, do camisa 7, parou no goleiro, mas, no rebote, Arrascaeta precisou finalizar duas vezes para marcar o segundo e sacramentar a vitória.

Pelo lado da equipe peruana, embora bastante limitada, a altitude de Cusco deixou o jogo mais equilibrado. Os donos da casa chegaram a empatar a partida, mas, com o auxílio do VAR, o gol acabou anulado, o que beneficiou o Flamengo.

Portanto, com a vitória, o Flamengo largou na frente no Grupo A da Libertadores. Com três pontos, a equipe lidera a chave, seguida de Estudiantes, da Argentina, e Independiente Medellín, da Colômbia, que empataram em 1 a 1 na cidade colombiana. O Cusco, sem pontos, segura a lanterna.

Flamengo encara sequência no Rio

O Flamengo terá agora uma sequência de quatro jogos no Rio de Janeiro, contando com Campeonato Brasileiro, Copa Libertadores e Copa do Brasil. O primeiro, neste sábado, pela 11ª rodada do Brasileirão. O Rubro-Negro encara o clássico contra o Fluminense, no Maracanã, com o mando dos tricolores.

Na próxima quinta-feira, é a vez de pegar os colombianos do Independiente Medellín, no Maracanã, pela segunda rodada da fase de grupos do torneio continental. O time treinado por Leonardo Jardim defenderá a liderança da chave.

Depois, já no fim de semana, mais precisamente no domingo, o Flamengo joga contra o Bahia, pela 12ª rodada do Brasileiro. A sequência do Flamengo termina no meio da semana seguinte. O adversário é mais um baiano. Desta vez, é a estreia da equipe carioca na Copa do Brasil contra o Vitória, pela ida da 5ª fase da competição.

O técnico do Palmeiras, Abel Ferreira, concordou com o pênalti marcado contra a sua equipe no empate contra o Junior Barranquilla, da Colômbia, na noite desta quarta-feira, fora de casa, pela Copa Libertadores da América.

No lance, o meia Maurício atinge o jogador adversário dentro da área em um lance fortuito, mas o VAR indicou a revisão. Posteriormente, o árbitro marcou a penalidade que originou o gol dos colombianos na partida (1 a 1).

Logo depois da partida, na entrevista coletiva, o treinador fez questão de cutucar a arbitragem de vídeo. Sem mencionar, o técnico português se referiu a um suposto erro de arbitragem na decisão da edição de 2025, em Lima, contra o Flamengo.

Na ocasião, os palmeirenses pediram um cartão vermelho ao volante Pulgar em um lance sem bola contra o zagueiro Bruno Fuchs. O chileno acertou o defensor palmeirense na canela e o VAR não chamou o árbitro para analisar a suposta agressão. O Flamengo ficou com o título.

“Vê-se claramente que Maurício quer tirar o pé, mas há um contato. Parece que esse ano o VAR vai funcionar. Isto é bom, ano passado o VAR da Conmebol não funcionou e esse ano parece que vai funcionar e isso é bom. Realmente houve o toque”, disse.

Abel admite surpresa com esquema

O técnico palmeirense admitiu que se surpreendeu com a formação adotada pelos colombianos na partida da noite desta quarta-feira. Na ocasião, o Junior Barranquilla entrou com três zagueiros e, por conta disso, o Palmeiras apresentou um primeiro tempo abaixo da crítica.

“Não posso mentir, sim, não estava à espera que o adversário viesse com uma linha de cinco e às vezes de seis e às vezes de sete, por isso fizemos muitos arremates fora da área, mas não acho que foi isso. O Júnior entrou mais dinâmico, mais fresco, mais agressivo, mas a partir dos 30 até o final só deu”, admitiu.

“Criamos muito, só faltou fazer mais um gol na oportunidade que tivemos. Parabéns ao Júnior, acaba por ser premiado com um ponto e infelizmente só conseguimos levar um ponto daqui, competição dura; difícil de recuperar”, completou.

Técnico critica o gramado

Abel Ferreira também não deixou de criticar o gramado do Estádio Olímpico de Cartagena. O gramado foi recém-reformado e, mesmo assim, recebeu uma avaliação baixa do português. O técnico indicou a grama muito alta como um fator que dificultou o jogo do Palmeiras na noite desta quarta-feira.

“Nosso adversário aproveitou o gol e se fechou bem. Gramado difícil de jogar para quem tem que propor e criar”, afirmou.

Three-and-a-half years ago, Lionel Messi ‘completed football’ by leading Argentina to glory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. It was a joy for every neutral to see the Barcelona legend finally lift the one trophy that had eluded him for so long, capping an amazing career that will almost certainly never be emulated.

Messi scored seven goals across Argentina’s seven games, including two in the thrilling final against France, and conjured up three memorable assists, deservedly landing the Golden Ball award as the player of the tournament. He was the Albiceleste’s undisputed talisman, and a true captain in every sense of the word.

It would, though, be a major disservice to call Argentina’s class of 2022 a one-man team. Julian Alvarez, Alexis Mac Allister and Enzo Fernandez all properly announced themselves to the world, with the latter named Young Player of the Tournament, while Nicolas Otamendi rolled back the years as the figurehead of a fearsome backline, and Emiliano Martinez became a penalty shootout hero.

Even those who had statistically underwhelming tournaments, like Angel Di Maria and Lautaro Martinez, still gave absolutely everything for the shirt and made vital contributions. After the shock opening defeat to Saudi Arabia, collective standards were raised to the maximum, and they never dropped. No other nation could match Argentina’s team spirit.

Unfortunately, the current picture is far less rosy. Lionel Scaloni’s side are sorely lacking the swagger of champions heading into their 2026 title defence in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Their preparation has been borderline shambolic, with Messi once again shouldering all the weight of expectation. Living up to it, at the age of 37, will be a very tall order, but that is just one of a plethora of issues Argentina face nearly two months out from kick-off…

AFPGrinding out winsOn paper, Argentina’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign could hardly have gone better. They topped the CONMEBOL standings by nine points ahead of second-placed Ecuador while posting the best attacking record. Messi scored eight goals to finish as top scorer in qualifying for the first time ever.However, that dominance was a reflection of the drop in quality across the rest of the field, with traditional rivals Uruguay and Brazil finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. There were worrying low points for Scaloni, too, most notably in defeats to Uruguay and Paraguay, and a 1-1 draw at home to Colombia, all of which Messi started.There was also a successful Copa America defence wedged in between the qualifying campaign, but again, the consensus at the end of that tournament was that Argentina did not hit top gear. They were grinding out wins without playing particularly well, and that theme has largely continued in their build up to the 2026 World Cup.
AFPFarcical friendliesArgentina played their first World Cup warm-up game against Venezuela in October, winning 1-0 without Messi. They have only played three games since then, though, and the quality of the opposition has plummeted.After wrapping up 2026 with a 6-0 hammering of Puerto Rico and a 2-0 win over Angola, the Albiceleste belatedly scheduled two more friendly games for the March international break against Mauritania, who are 115th in the FIFA world rankings, and 91st-ranked Zambia. These are not fixtures that tell us anything substantial about Argentina’s current level.Indeed, Mauritania went down 2-1 to the three-time World Cup winners on Friday, in a contest played at a snail’s pace. Goals from Fernandez and Nico Paz did little to mask a lethargic display from Argentina, while half-time substitute Messi was mobbed by Mauritania players and staff after the final whistle at La Bombonera.These lesser nations are just glad to be in Messi’s orbit; they don’t offer any genuine challenge to Argentina, so it’s difficult for the players to summon their usual enthusiasm. Not that Scaloni was in the mood to accept that reality.”The team didn’t play a good match. We have to say that so we can work on improving”, he said after the game. “We evidently can play much better; we’ve done it. All the guys we’ve been able to see have contributed their part, but when a match becomes complicated, it’s harder.”Frustrated goalkeeper Martinez went a step further: “It was one of the worst friendlies we’ve played. We lacked intensity, game and speed. It’s something we need to analyse and every time we wear the jersey do a little bit better.”
(C)Getty ImagesFinalissima blowMartinez then addressed the elephant in the room: “Thank goodness [the Finalissima wasn’t played], if we had played like this we would’ve lost.”Argentina had no choice but to approach Mauritania and Zambia after seeing their clash against European champions Spain in Qatar, as well as a subsequent friendly against the 2022 World Cup hosts, called off at late notice due to the ongoing military conflict in the Middle East.All of the more competitive countries had already locked in other commitments, and though the Finalissima could have been moved to the Bernabeu, Argentina baulked at the idea of playing such a fixture in front of what likely would have been a partisan Spanish crowd.Yes, a defeat may have been on the cards, because Martinez is right about Argentina not being in optimal shape, but it would have been far more beneficial than two half-hearted run-outs. Nicolas Tagliafico pointed out as much in his refreshingly honest reaction to the cancellation, saying: “If we put the title and the Finalissima aside, it was going to be an important match because you’re facing a team that you know also has a chance to compete for the World Cup. That helps you, it gives you a benchmark. It shows us where we might stand, and whether there are things to improve.”The 2022 Finalissima was certainly important for Argentina, as Messi and Di Maria led a scintillating 3-0 triumph over Euro 2020 winners Italy. Without that, easy friendly wins against the UAE, Jamaica, Honduras and Estonia would have been the only “benchmark”, and confidence in the squad that went to Qatar wouldn’t have been as high.It also served to drum up anticipation for supporters, which the 2026 World Cup desperately needs amid constant conversation about off pitch-issues. Add to that the fact that the world was robbed of Messi facing off against his Barcelona successor, Lamine Yamal, and the whole saga leaves a very bitter taste.

So here we are again, Tottenham Hotspur. Seven games into the Igor Tudor reign that was supposed to save Spurs from relegation, they look more doomed than ever before. They are one point outside the Premier League’s bottom three and are the only side without a win in the top-flight in 2026. Every time they seem to have turned a corner, a new disaster is waiting for them just ahead.

Tottenham confirmed on Sunday they had mutually agreed to part company with Tudor after 44 days at the helm. He left having drawn one and lost four of his five league games, while his only victory came in the second leg of a Champions League last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid in which Spurs were already 5-2 down.

The next manager has to be the right one, otherwise Tottenham will be a Championship club for the 2026-27 season. The hierarchy have thus turned to Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi, but they should beware the pitfalls of such a hire.

In an age where set pieces and fine margins are becoming the main way to win, he would still rather emerge as a victor by way of playing with a swagger.That should, in theory, marry up to what Tottenham and their fans want. One of the main knocks on Thomas Frank, sacked in February well over a couple of months after he had turned supporters against himself, was the style of play he had implemented. Spurs became a chore to watch and weren’t even getting much of an upgrade on results compared to the Dane’s predecessor, Ange Postecoglou, who famously lived and died by his attacking principles.”I want to enjoy. I’m living a dream and to live a dream you have to enjoy,” De Zerbi told The Athletic of his footballing philosophy in 2023 while manager of Brighton. “First of all is to enjoy. Second is to keep the mentality when I was a player. I wanted to be a protagonist on the pitch. To be a protagonist you have to keep the ball, to have the ball.”From it starts the ball possession. I was the No.10. You win the game through the No.10, No.11, No.9 and No.7, because they are the players with more quality. And to show their quality they have to be put in the right situations to play. And so starts the build-up, because we have to reach the No.7, No.9, No.10, No.11 with the ball in a good situation.”Most players who have worked under De Zerbi can vouch that he changed the way they perceived football. His recent track record also reads like the sort of coach Spurs would ordinarily be after, leading Brighton to their highest-ever Premier League finish of sixth in 2022-23, taking them to the Europa League last 16 a season later and then making waves in France with Marseille.
AFPMajor flawsThere remains a strong fascination around De Zerbi for how he likes to set his teams up. It’s for these reasons that he remains so high on Manchester United’s shortlist for the upcoming summer, should they decide not to hand Michael Carrick the head coach’s job on a long-term basis.Ultimately, no ‘big club’ had previously bit the bullet on hiring him. Where De Zerbi can make teams much better than the sum of their parts, they can equally collapse and crater without even being under pressure.The Italian’s volatility on a personal level, frequently and publicly threatening to walk away from whatever job he’s in if he feels he’s not the right person for the role, extends to how his teams play. They are almost as likely to blow teams away as they are to get walked all over themselves. It’s a trade-off that has kept Europe’s elite at arm’s length, with many clubs admiring De Zerbi but not wanting to be the ones who gave him the keys to their next glamorous project.

Spurs made checks on the Italian at the end of the 2022-23 season, in which they finished in eighth, two spots below his Brighton side, but a deal to make him manager at that time was never close. There is still long-standing interest to fall back on.But this Tottenham are in dire straits. The club has never experienced a crisis like the one it’s in right now. Though Spurs are yet to drop below the dotted line and into the bottom three, relegation seems more inevitable with each passing week given the recklessness of their performances, results and off-field antics.That Spurs have gone 13 matches without a Premier League victory is an almost sure-fire sign they are on their way down. Only three teams have made a worse start to a calendar year in the competition’s history, and all three were relegated come the end of the season.De Zerbi, more fiery than even the most inflammatory managers in recent Spurs memory, is inheriting a team supremely unsuited to his idyllic, evangelical play-style. There is little time for him to have a bedding-in period – he failed to win any of his first five Premier League matches at Brighton – and the squad is drastically unsuited to his needs. Tottenham have assembled a team of duellers, runners and second-ball winners, but have a noticeable vacancy for players who can pass or progress the ball under pressure.
